    What I do

Black box

Strategic thinking and execution of advertising and marketing projects.

Iíve held management and creative positions in technology companies, advertising agencies, and consumer publications in San Francisco, New York, Seattle, and Boston. I have considerable experience in developing promotional strategies and in managing complex projects to bring them in under tight deadlines.

  What I've done

I am currently the editor and publisher of The Infinite Matrix, a critically acclaimed website that publishes fiction, news, and opinion.

I was previously Director of Marketing for Global Automation, an independent software developer in Mountain View, California.

In the mid-1980s, as Director of Advertising and Sales Promotion at Microsoft Corporation, I was instrumental in taking the evolving company's advertising base from a handful of brochures and a few product ads to a complex, aggressive advertising program.

The Infinite Matrix
I devised the strategic plan for this daily online science-fiction magazine, developed the website, contracted with significant writers and columnists, and continue to edit and publish the magazine.

I took the magazine from concept to purchased content and finished website in less than four months,on a very tight budget. Originally funded by the techology company Matrix NetSystems, the magazine is now supported by private donors. You can read it at http://www.infinitematrix.net.

Stable Strategies and Others
Over the past several years I have been busy with the publication and promotion of my short story collection, Stable Strategies and Others (Tachyon Publications, San Francisco, 2004). Judging from the reviews, the enthusiasm on the Web, and the award nominations (Philip K. Dick Award, James Tiptree, Jr., Award, Nebula Award, World Fantasy Award), it has been a success.

    1998-2002

Global Automation
At Global Automation, a company that develops large-scale software projects for Fortune 1000 corporations,I set up the firm's first marketing overview, managed the re-design of their website and corporate identity, and oversaw development of marketing and sales materials.

GORP
I held several editorial postions at GORP, then the Web's largest and best-known site for people interested in active travel and the outdoors. As Managing Editor, I supervised the editing and production of 40 substantial stories a month about hiking, biking, kayaking, and active travel, and managed a staff of four producers. As Acquisitions Editor, I developed the freelance channel, improving the range and quality of freelance stories and photos. I also edited/produced feature stories.

On-line journalism
My column WebRadar appeared in the online edition of the international design magazine U&lc from 1998-2000. It examined design issues relating to content, typography, and the Web. Sample column: The War Between Links and Text
For Omni Magazine's website, I moderated a live chat, interviewing David Gelernter, Steven Johnson, and others active in electronic media.
I also wrote occasional feature stories for GORP and U&lc, such as Phoenix Cities of Central Asia.

During this time, at the dawn of Web commerce, I designed and produced commercial websites. I wrote sites for the onlineline game Microsoft Fighter Ace, the computer security company CyberSafe, and others.

My personal site, The Difference Dictionary, was chosen Cool Site of the Day.
